Alpha Watch Wander Control System Basics

The Alpha Watch Wander Control System is used to provide safety and security for wandering residents. With a combination of a control unit and an appropriate antenna system placed at a door, hallway, elevator, etc, added security is supplied to help prevent a wanderer from eloping. Each potential wanderer must be provided with a tag that can be placed anywhere on the body. Each of the tags can have a unique code to identify individual residents.

During normal operation an Alpha Watch System constantly looks for a tagged resident. When a tag approaches the protected area the control unit will identify the tag ID and display it on the LCD screen. Once a tag has been detected the control unit will light a red LED on the front panel to let you know the system is in an alert status. During this alert status the unit will activate any magnetic locks attached to the door. If a protected door is opened while detecting a tag an audible alarm will sound, notifying staff members. The ID of the resident will stay on the display of the control unit until a new tag is detected. In order to escort a tagged resident through the protected door a staff member must enter a 3 to 5 digit code on the control unit.

The Alpha Watch System has many programmable and jumper selectable functions.  The unit is ready to provide protection at initial power up with the default settings and jumpers.  However, many facilities wish to modify the settings to better suite their needs.  A few of the commonly used parameters that a facility may change are listed on the back of this page.

Even though the Alpha Watch System’s primary function is to monitor the presence of tagged residents, there are times when you may need to monitor the door to secure it from the passage of any unauthorized person.  A “perimeter” mode may be manually activated by the keypad on the control unit, or a unit can be programmed to enter and exit the “perimeter” mode at specific times.

While the unit is in “perimeter” mode the control unit is in a constant alert status. If a magnetic lock is in use the door will be securely and continuously closed.  In order for staff members to gain passage through the door they must enter a 3 to 5 digit escort code at the control panel to temporarily disable the control unit.  Switches and keypads are available for the opposite side of the door to allow access.
